U.S. TV doctor Mehmet Oz has announced his candidacy for a Pennsylvania Senate seat.

The Dr. Oz Show star made the big reveal in an article he wrote for the Washington Examiner, claiming his pandemic experiences made him think about politics.

"We have not managed our crises as effectively as past generations," he wrote. "During the pandemic, I learned that when you mix politics and medicine, you get politics instead of solutions. That's why I am running for the U.S. Senate: to help fix the problems and to help us heal."

Oz will run as a Republican to succeed Sen. Pat Toomey, who is retiring.

He has fronted The Dr. Oz Show, which is produced by Oprah Winfrey's Harpo Productions, since 2009. The show was renewed for its 13th and 14th seasons last year.
