Simon Cowell is "terrified" of catching coronavirus and is doubling up with surgical masks and hand sanitizer in a bid to fend off the illness.

The virus has now claimed the lives of over 1,600 people, with more than 60,000 confirmed cases worldwide – and America's Got Talent judge Simon isn't prepared to risk his or his son's health.

"I am terrified about it. I have worn masks for ages," he told journalist Dan Wootton for his debut talkRADIO show in the U.K. "When I cycle around town I wear a mask.

"But I am taking Eric to Disneyland Paris next weekend and I'm almost certain that when we're on the train we will be 100 per cent be wearing masks. And we'll have loads of hand sanitizer because it does scare me."

He added: "I wouldn't want to be on a cruise ship right now. Those people stuck on that cruise ship. Why they haven't taken them off and put them in a proper hospital is unbelievable. That's somewhere I wouldn't go."

Reflecting on the spread of the virus, which originated in the city of Wuhan, China, Simon compared the outbreak to something from a movie, musing: "With so many people traveling around the world it was always going to happen one day.

"We're seeing it right in front of our eyes right now. It does worry me."
