Harrison Ford “can’t wait” to reprise his role as Indiana Jones in a planned fifth installment of the blockbuster action franchise, according to producer Kathleen Kennedy.

The veteran Star Wars actor originated the role of the adventurous archaeologist in 1981’s Raiders of the Lost Ark, and has since returned for three follow-ups, the most recent being 2008’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

Ford was previously revealed to be reuniting with director Steven Spielberg for a fifth outing, but the project has been in the works for several years, with script delays forcing bosses at production company Lucasfilm to ditch initial plans for a 2020 release.

The setback sparked rumors suggesting Ford was ready to hang up his hat and whip, with Guardians of the Galaxy’s Chris Pratt touted as a possible replacement to star in a reboot of the movie series.

However, Ford shot down the claims last year, insisting “nobody” but him will ever portray Indiana Jones, and now Lucasfilm president Kennedy has confirmed the 77 year old is still raring to go – as soon as they perfect the screenplay.

She told BBC News, “We’re working away, getting the script where we want it to be and then we’ll be ready to go.”

“Harrison Ford will be involved, yeah,” she confirmed. “It’s not a reboot; it’s a continuation. He can’t wait.”

A new projected release date for the fifth Indiana Jones film has yet to be announced.
