Comedienne Tina Fey is taking Mean Girls back to the big screen with a new movie based on the Broadway musical of the same name.
The 30 Rock star helped to adapt her 2004 teen comedy for the stage in 2017, and now she is working on turning the theater production into a feature film for Paramount Pictures.
Fey will produce the new project with her former Saturday Night Live boss, Lorne Michaels, who previously helped to develop the original Mean Girls movie, which starred Lindsay Lohan and Rachel McAdams, and its musical incarnation.
“I’m very excited to bring Mean Girls back to the big screen,” Fey shares in a statement.
“It’s been incredibly gratifying to see how much the movie and the musical have meant to audiences. I’ve spent 16 years with these characters now. They are my Marvel Universe, and I love them dearly.”
Casting information has yet to be revealed, but Fey’s husband, composer Jeff Richmond, and lyricist Nell Benjamin will take charge of the movie’s music.
The film announcement coincides with the news that the Mean Girls musical will head to London’s West End in the spring of 2021, three years after it opened on Broadway.
