Kevin Smith has returned home after being rushed to hospital following a "massive heart attack".

The Clerks writer/director fell ill after completing the first of two of his Kevin Smith Live! stand up shows at the Alex Theater in Glendale, California, and had to cancel the second gig.

On Monday, Kevin revealed he had been struck down by heart attack and had to be hospitalized for emergency surgery.

However, the 47-year-old filmmaker returned to Instagram on Wednesday to share a smiling selfie and an update for fans on his health.

"Home again, home again, jiggety-jig! Home is where the heart is and the heart is feeling good!" he wrote. "It's actually getting more blood flow and oxygen than it has in a long time. So I am ALERT, to say the least!"

Kevin continued his message to thank his fans for their unwavering support during the tough time.

"Thank you all for the kind words you took the time to write to me about what my work has meant to you," he added. "In the last two days, I've read some breathtaking sentiments that have profoundly touched me. It honestly means the world under normal circumstances, but after Sunday night? Everything means so much more, obviously."

He also gave a special shout-out to Chris Pratt, writing: "Special thanks to @prattprattpratt for the prayers."

The Guardians of the Galaxy star found himself at the center of backlash from fans on social media after tweeting that he was "praying my ass off" for the director following his health scare.

But in a Facebook Live video on Tuesday, Kevin lambasted those who had slammed Chris for his kind-hearted sentiment.

"Poor Chris Pratt, one of my favorite actors on the planet, f**king put up a nice tweet, where he's just like 'Hey man, I don't know you that much but I love Clerks and I'm praying for you'and and apparently people were like, 'F**k your prayers' and attacked him and s**t," Kevin vented.

"And number one, thanks to Chris Pratt, how sweet was that. Number two, please don't fight over stuff like that. It's a waste of time. Whether you're religious or not, someone saying 'I'll pray for you,' it's good intentions."
