The family of Jim Carrey’s late girlfriend Cathriona White is accusing the actor of failing to pay for her funeral, after initially offering to cover costs.
The 30-year-old make-up artist took her own life in September, 2015 with a cocktail of prescription drugs, and a year after her passing her mother Brigid Sweetman and ex-husband Mark Burton launched legal proceedings against the 55-year old actor, claiming he was partly responsible for her death, as he provided White with the pills she overdosed on and allegedly gave her sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).
On Monday, Sweetman and Burton filed an amended complaint in the Superior Court of California, County of Los Angeles, alleging he “never paid a dime of funeral expenses” and “reneged on his offer” after learning White had left her family a “minimal amount of money.”
The Dumb and Dumber star has not yet commented on the new allegations, but he previously launched a counterclaim against Burton and Sweetman, alleging the lawsuit was a shakedown and demanded the court order his ex-girlfriend’s mother to pay the $372,000 bond to continue on with her legal battle. Last month, Carrey abandoned the attempt to get money from Sweetman, after her lawyers told his legal team that she couldn’t pay the sum.
In May, a judge also shut down Carrey’s attempt to strike all allegations he gave White STDs. The court order reportedly stated the allegations are wholly relevant and a key factual basis for the causes of action in the lawsuit.
A judge in Los Angeles also ruled the case could proceed, setting a provisional trial date for April, 2018.
The actor denies all the allegations.
